Qualcomm’s next Flagship processor for a smartphone just got announced, the Snapdragon 888 SOC comes baked in with its 5G modem, alongside next-Gen AI Engine for Flagship Smartphones. However, the numbering scheme for the processor is 888 and not 870 or 875 as it was earlier expected. This brand new processor by Qualcomm is an upgrade to Snapdragon 865 which was launched last year. During a virtual keynote at Snapdragon Tech Summit, 2020, Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 888 chip.
The SOC houses a third-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 5G modem that can supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks across all major bands worldwide. Alongside, sixth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine with an upgraded Hexagon processor to deliver a mind-boggling 26 TOPS (tera operations per second) performance. The processor is also capable of delivering an upgraded photography experience, with an all-new Qualcomm Spectra ISP. That will allow “users to capture photos and videos at 2.7 gigapixels per second or roughly 120 photos at 12MP resolution,” which means 35% faster than the previous-gen ISP, according to the company.
The Snapdragon 888 is the chipset that will “deliver the premium experiences users deserve” quoted Qualcomm during the keynote. Whereas Cristiano Amon, the president of Qualcomm Incorporated said: “It takes an organization that’s focused on tomorrow, to continue to deliver the technologies that redefine premium experiences.”
The San Diego-based company enlisted ASUS, Black Shark, Lenovo, LG, Meizu, Motorola, Nubia, Realme, OnePlus, OPPO, Sharp, Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE. These brands will launch flagships grade smartphone housing the Snapdragon 888 chipset in 2021.
