The coronavirus pandemic has put the US on its toes, as US drugs regulators are seeking to grant emergency approval to the second COVID-19 vaccine in upcoming days. According to the sources, the US Food and Drug Administration came to the decision on Thursday to approve Moderna’s vaccine on an emergency crisis after getting approval from an FDA panel of experts.
The green light to grant the vaccine will make the United States Of America the first country in the world to approve two vaccines Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. The head of regulators vaccine division Peter issued a statement on Thursday night that the vaccine division had informed Moderna they would work towards the “finalization and issuance” of an emergency approval according to the sources of Financial Times. The emergency approval of the second vaccine comes from the looming deaths due to the virus surging in the nation which has taken the lives of over 300,000 people in the country.
One of the panel experts Dr James Hildreth, Chief Executive of Meharry Medical College who voted in favour of the Moderna vaccines stated: “To go from having a (genetic) sequence of a virus in January to having two vaccines available in December is a remarkable achievement.” As the approval comes with guidelines too unlike Pfizer vaccines, Moderna vaccination will only be authorized above 18 years of age.
Stéphane Bancel, the chief executive of Moderna, said in a statement: “We thank the committee for their review and for their positive recommendation in support of Emergency Use Authorisation , we look forward to getting our vaccine to people in the US to help address this ongoing public health emergency.”
