Instagram blocked Sikh hashtag again for some users

Some users have complained on Twitter, that Instagram seems to have blocked the hashtag #sikh on its platform for a brief period of time. The block comes just over five months after the restriction of the #sikh hashtag for a number of users was seen by Facebook and Instagram.

Instagram had earlier in March responded to user complaints and stated that the said hashtag was "mistakenly blocked." The hashtag #sikh is not easily accessible on Instagram, as per the user reports. Some users have also confirmed their encounter with the same issue on social media platform Facebook.

Searching for the hashtag #sikh on Instagram revealed that the same hashtag had over 2.5 million posts on the site. Both Instagram and Facebook have refrained from making an official statement on the subject. Earlier in June, Facebook and Instagram were found on their websites blocking the hashtag #sikh.

It was unblocked immediately after the problem was posted on social media by many users. Instagram further apologized for the action and said on March 7, after receiving a report, the hashtag was "mistakenly blocked.

Apart from censoring posts bearing the hashtag #sikh, Facebook was also seen restricting messages on Instagram earlier this year that included the hashtag #blacklivesmatter.
