Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit promulgated an ordinance to 'ban online games' in the backdrop of the steep rise of suicides among gamers in the state. The decision was taken by the state government late Friday levying an INR 5000 fine and six months imprisonment for those who found engaging in it.
The following ordinance after the surge of complaints about the suicides and youngsters suffering heavy losses in online games."Due to online gaming, innocent people, mainly youngsters are being cheated and some people have committed suicide. To avoid such incidents of suicide and protect the innocent people from the evils of online gaming," the Government submitted the proposal, seeking amending relevant police acts, the release said. Citizens with common gaming houses will also be penalized with INR 10,000 and face two years of imprisonment.
The ordinance statement also banned 'electronic transfer of funds' used for wagering or betting, distributing the winnings, prize money, and punishing those running the company which conducts online gaming by wagering and betting.
